The Eye of the Beholder: Six of the Best Digital SLRs

Tech and tradition meet in digital SLRs to create some of the most exciting creative gadgets on the market. We pick six of our favourite.

Celebrated photographer Nadav Kander once told Port of the vivid early memories he had of his grandfather’s photography store cupboard: “I would go in, wind the cameras up and listen to them whirl in the dark.”

A camera is an evocative machine. It can provoke nostalgia and inspiration in anyone who has taken even a passing interest in its medium-like qualities: always reflecting back a world at once familiar and unknown.

Increasingly we encounter hybrid gadgets in our day-to-day lives, and while a lot is gained through the practicality of the versatile, a tool that exists purely for the virtue of its own particular discipline circles the user’s mind back time and again to those virtues. Focused devices are passports into the world of their artform.

Kander says of his first camera: “I loved its precision, and it’s that that led me into photography – not the need to make pictures, but the need to use an instrument with great precision.” It’s an exacting proclivity multi-disciplinary smart-gadgets will never inspire in quite the same way.

And yet, while puritans would have it that only an analogue camera is the real deal, an exciting wealth of tools and features are enhancing digital SLRs beyond being the attention-deficient cousin of their older relatives: startlingly high-def resolutions; built-in 4K video capture capability and state-of-the-art smartphone syncing apps, to name but a few. And extending, tiltable LCD touchscreens – allowing the photographer total control even in the most unforgiving positions – speak of a fusing of the high-tech and the physical that even the most hardened old-schooler would struggle not to enjoy.
