Port Curates: The Uniqlo x Jil Sander Winter Collection
The J+ label returns for its latest instalment, bringing Sander’s signature architectural minimalism to the masses with an affordable collection that offers a fresh perspective on winter staples.
In 2009, Uniqlo and purveyor of functional minimalism Jil Sander launched collaborative label +J, led by the designer herself. As far as high street meets high fashion collaborations go, the collection truly challenged industry conventions of luxury and accessibility with its single mission to simplify life with quality clothing. Following Sander’s departure from her namesake label in 2014, the chapters of the J+ story have remained an outlet for its founder’s vision. Now the narrative of +J continues to evolve, with the designer and Uniqlo joining forces once again to continue the quest for a uniform wardrobe with quiet sophistication.
“I prefer to attract interest in clothes in a more subtle way, concentrating on a new language of form and fresh proportions,” Sander says of her craft, something that she was keen to explore in the collection with the high street giants. “I avoid superfluous decorations that distract from the personality of the wearer. I concentrate on adding value through materials, craft, and the perfect fit.” Sharing the basic principles of modernity, durability, and uncluttered style, Uniqlo and Sander have united on a new front: a sustainable approach that appeals to our new world. Substantial fabrications spanning Habotai silk, pure cashmere and feather nylon down come to life in a signature pared-back aesthetic via architectural shapes and slick, narrow cuts designed for repeat wear, year after year. But above all else, there is a distinct feeling of comfort.

On bracing ourselves for a new beginning, Sander explains “We are still shaken from the pandemic, but cautiously optimistic. We return to social life, but we want to feel protected. Comfort has become dear to us. We want to feel a personal shell.” The cocoon effect is apparent in standout pieces such as the Men +J Down Oversized Coat, a gargantuan sleeping bag affair that plays on one of Uniqlo’s most famed product lines, or the Men +J Oversized Duffle Coat, boasting generous volumes with a controlled for a modern twist on a winter classic.

Men +J Cashmere Blend Zipped Hoodie
A loungewear staple is refined with a stylish design that is warm and soft to the touch. Grosgrain ribbon detailing and Milanese rib knit on hem and sleeves are the true luxury touches that set this collaboration apart.
Men +J Down Oversized Coat
A riff on the staple Uniqlo padded coat, the duvet-esque proportions feel extra plumped with a nylon-feather down for added style and purpose. But it's the extra cocooning hood and exaggerated zip pockets that make it.
Men +J Cashmere Crew Neck Jumper
A wolf in sheeps clothing? This two-tone sweat offers a modern take on the timeless luxury of cashmere for a piece you're not afraid to wear on a daily basis.
Men +J Premium Lambswool V Neck Cardigan
Any fusty associations with the cardigan seem to have dissipated in recent years, thrilling news for anyone partial to layering one over a polo knit. Premium lambswool takes a simple design to the next level, with the double pocket offering a satisfying design detail.
Men +J Supima Cotton Regular Fit Shirt
Supima cotton represents less than 1% of cotton grown in the world so it's a real rarity to see it used as part of a high street collaboration. Its extra-long staple fiber gives cotton undisputed premium properties of strength, softness and colour retention, perfect for maintaining a style stalwart such as this.
Men +J Wool Blend Tucked Trousers
Again, the devil is in the details in these wool trousers: the just-so cropped length, the meticulous waistband and a gentle pleat that feels instantly elevated without being formal.
Men +J Oversized Duffle Coat
Paddington could never. A little longer and infinitely more robust than the duffle coay we remember from our school days - this could withstand even the harshest of winters.
Men +J DRY Joggers
The right way to wear loungewear outside the house, with supreme fabrics and a sophisticated taupe shade that'll pair well with a more tailored coat. Just add slimline white leather sneakers.
Men +J Wool Blend Oversized Peacoat
An all-over boxy fit adds modernity to a military classic. A real beauty that will look excellent with the relaxed wool trousers from the collection.
