Port Approves: The October Style Edit

Discover Nico Parker's picks of the best menswear and grooming essentials to take on the cold snap
Each month, I essentially come to you with a meteorological outlook and how that will essentially impact everything in your atmosphere. As Brits and self-confessed moaners about such matters, nothing dictates our seasonal personalities more. But October's brisk temperatures needn't spell disaster for our dispositions. That crisp bite of autumn ensures it’s not just the leaves that are shedding the remnants of summer but our wardrobes, too - and that is a joyous occasion. The languid linen suits and carefree, sockless looks are no longer cutting it. Gentlemen, now is the time to give yourselves a great big hug and embrace layers and textures, and perhaps even a deeper relationship with your favourite knitwear.
Autumn dressing is all about mood. The days grow shorter, the air a little sharper, and we inevitably lean into a more introspective palette. Earthy tones dominate the scene—think rich burgundy, forest green, and, of course, every shade of brown from caramel to cocoa. This is the moment to become one with the landscape (minus the actual foliage sticking to your tweed). Feels good, doesn't it?

When it comes to outerwear, don’t just grab that tired old jacket from the back of the cupboard. Opt for a statement coat—something that says, "I'm ready." A wool overcoat or a sharply tailored trench does the trick.
Let’s not forget grooming. As the temperatures drop, so too does the moisture from your skin. A nourishing moisturiser is no longer optional; it’s a survival tactic. And for those sporting facial hair, now’s the time to add a beard oil into your routine to keep everything soft and civilised.
So, there you have it—October. Just because the days are getting darker doesn’t mean your style has to follow suit. Discover my picks of the best menswear, grooming and lifestyle to kick off the season right.
Ready For Takeoff
With its luxurious shearling lining and sleek leather finish, this boxy-fit jacket strikes that all-important balance between not feeling like you want to wear a winter coat yet but also not wanting to freeze to death. Ideal for crisp, cold days when you still want to look effortlessly cool.
Wide Awake
Normally I'm not much one for chinos outside of a formal environment. But this roomy Uniqlo version brings a modern twist to a tailoring classic, making them an easy go-to for both casual and smart looks this season.
White Denim Shirt
This is an understated essential. In fact, it's genius. Combining the rugged texture of denim with a crisp, clean white finish, it's the perfect replacement for your usual cotton option - ideal for layering or worn on its own for a fresh, minimalist look.
Lucky Stripe
With its warm palette and block stripes, you'll want to reach for Carhartt WIP's 'Merton' sweater as soon as temperatures drop. Just add jeans.
It's Shacket Season
If in doubt, shacket. This one is light yet more robust than the styles you will have worn throughout summer, blending the structure of a jacket with the casual ease of a shirt. This fit is ideal for layering over knitwear as well as a simple tee.
Look Rich
While Augustinus Bader developed 'The Cream' as a daily moisturiser for those with slightly oiler skin types, 'The Rich Cream' is recommended for those with a dryer complexion (which is all of us from October onwards). This fast-absorbing and weightless formula is fortified with nourishing Argon Oil, Avocado Oil and Evening Primrose Oil, and the patented TFC8® complex, which works at a cellular level to plump, smooth and bring back elasticity.
Ain't Nothing But A Houndstooth
This modern overcoat will ease your wardrobe into the cooler months. It's made from structured bouclé enhanced with wool, cashmere and camel hair for a tactile handle and jacquard-woven with a distorted houndstooth pattern that's as versatile as black, but a little more exciting.
Rugby Types
Here's something a bit different. The Elder Statesman has applied its eclectic and joyful approach to this season's trending rugby shape - and the end result is positively spirit-lifting. This shirt is crafted from medium-weight Italian cashmere that feels super soft against the skin. It's hand-dyed using the brand's signature spray technique, making it feel a little more rave than rugby.
Just A Great Jacket
Quality wool, grown and woven from the EU, cut and sewn in Portugal. Contrast cord collar, fully lined with all sorts of pockets to sort all sorts. Leafy, earthy colours. This Pervical jacket is exactly the sort of thing you should be wearing right now.
