The Quiet Luxury Of Uniqlo's Cult Wireless Lingerie
The high street giants have released a new £19.90 wireless bra that combines comfort, style and innovation...
There are few high street names which would warrant the same use of language as a luxury brand. Yet, of all the cheap and cheerful stores that have inserted themselves into the fashion arena, Uniqlo is the only one to have built a reputation for modern, functional design with a focus on everyday things done very well. You’ll find one of its staple white cotton tees in the wardrobe of many an editor, shoulder to shoulder with Lemaire, JW Anderson or even Jil Sander – a shared space these brands are only too happy to occupy, as demonstrated by the numerous collaborations they themselves have created in cahoots the Japanese giant. But it’s their latest lingerie release that serves of a reminder of the innovation, technology and exactitude that sets Uniqlo apart from its fast fashion compadres.
On the surface, it’s a rather nice lace bra. But delve a little deeper and you’ll see it's part of Uniqlo’s ongoing technical response to a sartorial issue that’s been rumbling on for too long. Wired bras are eternally bothersome, and plenty women spend most of their day longing to whip them off at the end of it. They can poke, they can prod, they stuff you into a cup shape against all odds; holding on to the ‘beauty is pain’ mantra in a time where we put comfort first like never before. Uniqlo’s adept response to shifting consumer priorities during the pandemic is what catapulted it to the pinnacle of women's innerwear sales in Japan in 2020, with a range of wireless bras that promised to be like no wireless bras that had ever come before. Their £19.90 Stretch Lace Wireless Bra is the latest addition to the line-up, and is a testament to Uniqlo's commitment to affordable luxury for the masses.
This padless, cupless creation offers a soft and stretchy lace design that conforms seamlessly to the contours of the wearer, achieving a comfortable fit and proper support that can cater even to larger bust sizes.
They’ve even made some updates to the ever-popular 3D Hold Wireless Bra. What has been hailed as the perfect T-shirt bra quickly became a firm favourite, and has recently been improved with more cup sizes and an improved bust fit due to an update of internal technology structure. They also switched up the back, expanding the adjuster by using 4 rows of hook eyes instead of 3 as well as reducing the thickness of this adjuster for maximum comfort all round. Why is this important? Because it’s unusual for a brand to show this much care and attention to an item that doesn’t even cost £20. The high street is famed for a decline in quality of its products, rarely the improvement.
It might not be atelier level stuff, but it matters.
