New York designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne on winning the prestigious menswear prize
London has a huge range of prizes and awards to help young designers grow their brands. In New York there’s perhaps fewer of them but, with so many other American inventions, they’re bigger and better. The CFDA price for US fashion and accessory designers looks at established names and brands while the Vogue Fashion Fund highlights new and upcoming talent, and last week New York brand Public School took home the award for emerging menswear brand. Besides talking to Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne afterwards, we also got exclusive behind the scenes access as the designers got ready to face the crowds…

”This win is major! When you look at the past finalists and winners, they have all had a major impact and have solidified themselves as a major voice in the marketplace. It’s also validation for all the work we have put in thus far… and for the work we will be putting in going forward. This injection of money is going right back in the company… building a staff to help us proceed to grow and the planned womenswear may come sooner then everyone planned because of this, who knows!There’s a huge push for menswear in general and it feels great to be talked about in the same breath as the other finalists. Our style is convergent, modern and strong – it’s a non-traditional approach to menswear – it’s willing to take risks. There’s so much good stuff happening at the moment all over the place; London and New York are similar in the sense they are both are street-driven cities but the energy coming from London’s fashion right now is quite amazing!”
