Photo Essay: Valentino AW13

Photographer Carlotta Manaigo went backstage to document Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli’s first Paris menswear show

Having shown at Pitti Uomo in Florence the past two seasons, Chiuri and Piccioli took on Paris for their Autumn Winter 2013 collection. The June show was all about camouflage and the duo actually managed to give the urban pattern a luxurious slant, something many have tried and few has managed. This time around, even though we spotted a camo trench coat, the focus had moved on. At Hotel Salomon de Rothschild we were treated to an array of well cut suits and coats oozing luxury á la British modernism. Slim evening suits, crombie coats and tuxedos all boasted houndstooth prints, Prince of Wales checks and Black Watch tartan; it was the perfect mixture of Italian elegance and British attitude. With heat-bonded leather bands across the outerwear this collection took on both the future as well as the swinging 60s.

Valentino called it ‘Sub-Zero Couture’ and who are we to disagree.
